If you're new to loose leaf tea, the sheer number of tins, blends, and unfamiliar names can feel like a lot.
I get asked all the time how to spot quality loose leaf tea versus something that's going to taste flat in the cup.
The good news? Once you know what to look for, it's actually pretty simple.
Our Start With the Leaf Itself
Take a look (and a sniff) before you buy. Quality loose leaf tea should have leaves that are in identifiable pieces, not a fine, dusty powder. That powder is usually what ends up in the cheapest tea bags, the leftover bits after the good leaves have already been sorted out.
Leaf tea holds onto more of its natural oils, which means more character in your cup and leaves that can often be steeped a second time.
Aroma matters too. Good tea should smell like something, whether that's a bright, grassy green tea or a malty, deep black tea. If a tea smells like cardboard or nothing at all, that's a sign it's been sitting around too long or wasn't processed with much care.
Know Where It Comes From
Origin says a lot about a tea's personality. A Ceylon will taste different from an Assam, and a Chinese green tea will taste worlds apart from a Japanese one.
Quality loose leaf tea usually comes with some information about its origin or the style it's modeled after, because that traceability is part of what you're paying for. For example, you'll always find the origin of each tea we sell listed on the product page.

Trust Your Palate Over the Label
Fancy-sounding grade names on a package don't automatically mean better tea. What matters most is how it tastes and smells to you.
This is actually one of my favorite parts of helping people who are new to loose leaf: watching someone smell three different black teas side by side and realize they all have their own distinct personality.
